Advertising on TV

Sometimes clever writing isn’t quite so clever after all. Sometimes the windows a writer paints into the characters’ souls isn’t quite about painting the picture but something a bit more contrived. Sometimes the little, last minute details or ramblings during a conversation between two characters might seem like a great way to draw those characters closer but it’s far more than that. Sometimes it’s only money that drives those scenes.

Besides online printing, televised marketing is an extremely powerful weapon in the business industry. Even since the advent of the digital video recorder, the world of advertising has been turned on its head. There used to be a time when you had to get home at 8 p.m. to watch your favorite show and you would have to sit through the commercial breaks forced to watch whatever product they were trying to sell to you. Then the DVR came along and it has made it so that you can tape shows you aren’t home to watch. But then gives you the ability to fast forward right through the millions of dollars that people pay to advertise their products. This is a big deal to advertisers who want to hock their wears but there was only one thing left to do: get their products in a place where the viewer wouldn’t fast forward.

This led to the advent of product placement, which is why you see people working on a certain brand of computer or a certain type of cell phone. These things are what advertisers pay millions of dollars to get into TV shows. Even a conversation about a particular product is seen now and paid for by some company. This is a win-win for the company and the studio and usually it only causes a slightly watered down version of the product you were already watching, which means you don’t lose.
