The Evolution of the Television

We have all become accustomed to our large, thin televisions.  Technologies such as satellites, high definition and even 3D technology have changed television, as we know it.  Still, it is interesting to take a few minutes to review the evolution of television to see just how far we have come.
The first televisions were black and white.  Viewers were lucky if they had access to three channels.  In fact, for the most part, everyone watched the exact same things.  Instead of local programming, television viewers only had access to national programming.  People around the country watched the same shows, saw the same news and enjoyed the same games.
This limited access wasn’t enough for most viewers and, slowly, over time, television began to evolve, giving viewers access to a much more local version of television.  News programs were specific to a locality, programs were shown at different times and not everyone had access to the same broadcasts.  This was only compounded with advancements like cable and satellite television.
Today, advancements are more in the realm of hardware technology.  Developers have been focusing on creating thinner televisions that produce a better quality image.  We are just now beginning to see a move towards televisions with integrated 3D technology.
Today’s televisions and the technology that supports them bear little resemblance to the television of yesterday. Because we, as Americans, are generally not satisfied with what we have, we can expect that the televisions of tomorrow will bear little resemblance to what we have today.
